PROGRAM
Eddie Galarza, City of Santa Maria Youth Violence Prevention

Our program this week was provided by Eddie Galarza, with the City of Santa Maria Youth Violence Prevention Department.

Eddie, along with Santa Maria Mayor, Alice Patino, discussed the new Mayor’s Task Force for youth safety that is being created to help prevent youth violence in the area.  The goal of the task force will be to develop a Policy Committee of community leaders in order to develop goals, and objectives to address youth violence.   The Task Force will be comprised of around 35 members, and serve as a policy board.  The task Force will include Superintendents, people from the DA’s office and non-profits.  There will be another section of the task force, which will be more of a “boots on the ground” division.

Eddie Galarza, has been working on this for the past 3 months.  He has worked with youth for several years including Boys and Girls Club, and  is now working with the city of Santa Maria.  His job includes working with families and different agencies to find ways to stop the violence in our community.  We are losing our kids.   They are dying for dumb reasons.  We need to be in our schools, and talk to these youth and help them understand that when you are involved in drugs or gangs, there is no future.

Alex Pasada from Santa Maria Parks and Rec department has been involved in programs for youth for a long time, but everyone is concerned with some of the patterns that have started.    He assists in mentoring kids on the playgrounds, the Y and Aces providing strong role models.
