PROGRAM
Our program this week was presented by CALM. The focus of the presentation was around the medical and social implications of Childhood Trauma and how CALM is addressing it. This is part of the Mayor’s task force on youth safety. Adverse childhood experiences are the single greatest public health crisis in our society today. It is 7th of the top 10 reasons for death. Exposure of high doses leads to increased heart trauma and lowers life expectancy by 20 years.
Exposure to adversity effects childhood development. There is a score called the ACE - Adverse Childhood Experiences, that is calculated around the number of such events. ACES are incredibly common. The higher your ACE score, the worse your health outcomes. It inhibits learning and impulse control among other things. And youth with a high score are more likely to engage in high risk behavior. But even if they don’t engage in high risk behavior, they are more likely to have cardiac issues. This is treatable and beatable.
