California Earthquake Authority
Most Californians don’t have earthquake insurance. However there is a real risk, a 99% chance of a 6.7 or larger quake sometime within the next 30 years. There is a 75% chance of a 7.0 Earthquake within the next 30 years. Earthquakes strike without warning. The Northridge if it occurred today would cost over $160 Billion. We don’t need to live in fear, but we need to be prepared.
The common myth about an earthquake is that the Government will bail me out, that’s why you have insurance. This is not how government programs work.
Homeowners policies do not cover earthquake damage; the only way to be covered is to get earthquake insurance.
The CA Earthquake authority is a not-for-profit insurance company that started in 1984 when CA became the only state in the union to mandate that people are offered Earthquake insurance. Since 1984, insurance companies must offer EQ policy when they sell you homeowner’s insurance.
California Earthquake authority (CEA) was established by the state legislature.
CEA is publically managed, and privately financed. There are currently 950,000 policy holders. The problem is not having enough money to pay claims, but having enough policy holders. The CEA has lowered rates for earthquake insurance by over 50% since its inception. Go to the CEA website and check it out. There is a calculator that will help you determine what your policy would cost.
