Dale Johnson presented his mother, Ginger Johnson with a Paul Harris Fellow Awards.  His parents celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary today!

Kenneth Kahn presented a very interesting program on the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.  He talked about the sense of pride he has as a tribal member.
The Chumash are a thriving tribal government and a thriving community just like any city, county or state.
 
The tribe was officially recognized in 1901.  At that time they had
99 acres which has increased to 130 acres.  It is one of the smallest reservations in the state, and has over 90 homes on the reservation.
 
Gaming isn’t new to Chumash; ancestors have participated in games of years. 
In 1980 large scale gaming was started, and in 2000 Prop 1A allowed them to increase to about 2,000 machines.  Last year  the tribe renewed their gaming compact.  In 2003 the majority of the exiting facility opened.
Today they have a 300-room resort, and a 7,500 sq. ft. Spa. 
At the time of construction,1,700 union workers were on site building the addition which took 758,000 work hours and was completed in 18 months.
 
Chumash is the largest and most popular employer in the valley. 
Santa Maria is home to almost 37% of the employee base.  More than 2,000 Santa Barbara county residents work at Chumash.
 
Generosity is important to the Chumash. Giving back to the community is a long-standing tradition.  Through their foundations they donate to various nonprofits in the community.
