ANNOUNCEMENTS

1)  Barn Party Luau Info: Auction items need to be in by April 19th. Sell your tickets (or comp them if you want to) ASAP and give the info to Kate Ferguson. Decorating "move-in" day is Monday April 23rd (5:30 to 7:00), if you can be of help, contact Mark Jackson to sign up.

2) Boys & Girls Club Fundraiser: Friday April 20 at the Radisson. Our club has bought a table. Contact Roberto Rodriguez if you would like to attend.

3) Police Council Golf Tournament/Comedy Night: Monday June 11 at the Santa Maria Country Club. Contact Jerry Walsh (er.....I mean Schmidt)blush for more details.

4) Rotary Club Employee Appreciation Meeting: This year it is scheduled for April 26 (only 21 days away)Please submit your names to Mike Buhring as quickly as possible so that he can have all the award certificates prepared and ready to go.

5) Rodeo Window Decorating Contest: Alice Patino and Bob Orach explained the contest to our club members. The art will take place along Broadway and Main for all business owners that wish to participate. The cost is $50 per business. Our club decided to help "jump start" the process and donated $501 to the cause.

6) Rotary Scholarships: The annual event is fast approaching. Mike Gibson needs 11 or 12 members to help with the committee and review the submitted applications. If you have the time and are interested, please contact Mike and he will give you all the details. It's a great program and all members should at least try it once. You won't regret it.

7) Ladies Get Loud for CALM: The annual event takes place next week on April 12th at the Santa Maria Country Club. My understanding is that it is close to being sold out. A number of male Rotarians have donated their time to be waiters that evening. Three tables full of female Rotarians and members wives will participate as well. This is always a fun event and helps raise much needed funds for this very worthy cause. If you need more information, please contact Mike Gibson.

BRAGS

Tim Seifert: had a big birthday!! Welcome to the 60's my friend. Judging by the story on how his day went, I think that he had a very Happy Birthday! $60

Ted Ortega: has been gone for a very long time and has been in a myriad of places (Hawaii, Las Vegas, Santa Barbara, etc). It looks like he's now back for awhile (I think) with a home remodel that he and Beth are now taking on. Anyway, it's good to see him back in his meeting chair once again. $100

Kathy Simas: is extremely happy that her son Brian recently got engaged to be married. No date has been set as of yet, but she and her husband Alex are looking forward to the exciting times ahead. $100

Jim Peterson: was very proud of his friend Dave Cross who gave $40 to the Jimmy Friedlein compassion fund. Jim P matched the $40 with his own brag.

Laurie Tamura: gets free brags for the entire month of April (so says President Tim). Laurie has taken valuable time out of her schedule to help run the business portion of the club's activities. Thank you Laurie! We really appreciate all your help during this six month transition process.

FINES

Mark Jackson: was fined because something wasn't sitting on Tim Seifert's porch on his birthday. Didn't quite hear exactly what it was (Corvette, Jaguar, Bugatti????). Anyway, whatever it wasn't,..... cost Mark $30
PROGRAM

Phil Hansen
Santa Maria Chief of Police

This week's speaker was Chief of Police Phil Hansen. Mr. Hansen came to us from the Los Angeles Police Department. While there, he served 36 years as a Captain. Twenty of those years involved being a full time SWAT member. He eventually retired from the force and was enjoying his life as a retiree when he received a call from fellow officer Ralph Martin who urged him to come up to Santa Maria and help him transition and improve the existing police force. He and his wife have now been here over five years and they have enjoyed every minute of it. In the past five years, over 50 new officers have been hired. The entire staff of officers now sits at approximately 120. Public safety is the #1 priority that is taught throughout the force. He is very proud of his department and looks forward to the continued training and improvement that is being experienced on a daily basis. After speaking, Chief Hansen answered various questions from the audience. We are very fortunate to have Mr. Hansen as our Chief of Police.
