Allan Hancock Lecture
Professor Roger Hall
This week's program was presented by AHC professor Roger Hall. Mr. Hall spoke to the club about the life and times of Mr. Allan Hancock (who our local college is named after). Mr. Hancock made the bulk of his fortune in the oil business. Starting out in the Los Angeles area, the Hancock family owned over 4,000 acres in the downtown area. The prestigious Hancock Park area as well as the La Brea Tar Pitts were just a few of the areas that were a part of the family fortune. The Hancock family eventually moved up to the Santa Maria Valley where he further increased his wealth and cultivated his other interests. He was a world traveler as well as a skilled seaman and airplane pilot. Railroad operations were also a major business interest for him. This system helped farmers transport their crops in a more efficient manner. Overall, Mr. Hancock was a valued asset to our community and his enthusiasm and generosity helped create the thriving community that we live in today. Professor Hall had many pieces to his lecture and gave us only a brief summary due to meeting time constraints. A full lecture series can be found on YouTube for anyone to view at their convenience. The club would like to thank Professor Hall for taking time out of his busy day to join us this morning.
