An ethnic slur leads to a household invention and a Nobel Prize!

Circa 1925, while observing automobile painters grapple with masking to paint two-tone cars, a banjo playing engineer for 3M, Richard Drew, heard one of the painters exclaim, “Tell those 'scotch' bosses of yours to put more adhesive on this tape!”  Drew went back to the lab and invented the world’s first efficient masking  tape.  Subsequently, the first “transparent cellophane tape” became known as “Scotch Tape” and is commonly found in households ‘round the world.  During the ‘lean’ years of the Great Depression “scotch” tape was used to make quick fixes to household items.

In 2010 two physicist researchers, Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, using normal Scotch tape, were able to develop a process to extract a very thin layer of carbon (graphene) from the tape allowing for the production of touch screens, next-gen light panels and solar cells.

BRAGS
Andy Caldwell proudly shared that daughter Kelli received official notification that she is now a CPA. $50

Matt Diel and Brenda enjoyed their anniversary on an Alaskan cruise.  Unfortunately, he managed to contract COVID, but fortunatley was recovered sufficiently to sit with his SMBR friends.  Upon his return to Santa Maria he was advised that he had aced his insurance certification and is now lookin' for 'living' clients.  $50

Dale Johnson celebrated his fathers ninety-something birthday.  That's alot of orbits around the sun. $20

John Everett let us know he's gonna be a grandpa pretty soon. $30

Frank and Scottie Ortiz sat in the sun and the hot bleachers watching his Giants take a beating!  They, too, enjoyed a baby shower for their soon-to-be daughter-in-law.  $25

FINES
President Berto managed to get his hands on a picture of the Chamber's Award Gala and saw many SMBR smiling faces, but none of them appeared to have their Rotary pin proudly displayed.  Berto was so disappointed that he laid a $30 fine on James Thomas, Laurie Tamura, Shannon & Tim Seifert, Kelli Briggs and...above all...Glenn MorrisKathy Simas was so guilt-ridden that she volunteered she attended and was "without pin."  For her honesty, Berto gave her a $30 CREDIT.  Imagine  that, a Rotary President with a Heart!

PROGRAM
Dr. David Ketelaar            Jim Small            Ken Dalebout

Marian Medical Center Outpatient Psychiatric Unit
Dr. David A. Ketelaar is the head of the Marian Hospital Outpatient Psychiatric Unit. He is a Board Certified Emergency Medicine physician in Santa Maria, California and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area and elsewhere, including St. Mary Medical Center-Long Beach and Marian Regional Medical Center. He received his medical degree from David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and has been in practice for more than 20 years.

During his tenure at Marian Hospital, Dr. Ketelaar has worked tirelessly to provide psychiatric care locally to avoid trips to distance facilities.  During the recent past the need for such a facility became hyper apparent.  Local fundraising efforts have been very successful, exceeding $2.5M.  When coupled with various grants of $2M the program was able to move forward. After nearly 8 years of constant effort ... and with the full support of Marian Hospital ... the Outpatient Psychiatric Care Center has begun operations at 1401 E. Main Street.  The current facility is licensed for individuals 18 and over, principally to assist in crisis stabilization.
