ANNOUNCEMENTS

1) Shelter Feed: tonight, 8/25. Thanks to Martin & Debbie, Michele, & Laurie

2) Banner Project: Saturday, 8/27 @ 9:00. Volunteers are needed to spruce up our Banners. Eddie Stanfield brought a banner to add from Portland, the 4th largest Rotary Club. Frank Ortiz had an additional 40 banners to add. The biggest discussion was around where the banners went....... Jim, Tim, Shannon??

3) Serve Santa Maria: August 27, this group helps with several projects around our community. Go to servesantamaria.com for more information and/or to sign up.

4) Molly Ringwald Band: August 28 @ 1:00. Teresa will have Pop-ups and chairs for Rotary Members. It will be a fun time....come early and enjoy.

5) Shoes For Students: The annual golf tournament will be held at the S.M. Country Club on Sunday September 11. Every penny goes to support kids. Dinner is $35 at the Santa Maria County Club.

6) Taste of the Town: September 3

7) Kids Night Out in Guadalupe: September 15. Come out and support the kids,

7) Taste of Mexico: Friday, September 9 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Money raised at the event goes to Leisure and Youth for scholarships for kids who cannot afford services.

8) YMCA Golf Tournament: Friday, September 30 at the Santa Maria County Club

9) Operation Surf: October 21, BBQ at Ted Ortega's - more info to come.

10) Barn Party: May 13, 2017 - there will be some significant changes in the venue.

11) Paul Harris Fellow: Frank Ortiz reminded us that the PHF points are for contributions you have already made. We would like to have some PHF recognitions at the District Governor's Visit on September 22.

12) And, speaking of Paul Harris Fellows - Kristine Mollenkauf awarded a PHF to her husband, Jeff Hague, for his service and help to our club.

13) Hats for Hope: Mike Gibson presented Hats for Hope organizers, Toni McCracken and Diane Martion with a $500 check. The organization helps raise money for hats and wigs for patients going through cancer treatment.

BRAGS

Rotarian of the Month - Mike Cardona,

Laurie Tamura: bragged $50 on Mike Buhring for his service as a "Bun Boy" at the Day in the Park. She also thanked everyone who helped to make the day a great success.

James Thomas: bragged $25 on Kristine and Jeff for hosting a Cigar and Whiskey night - great time, with great company.

Teri Strickland: bragged $39, on her recent Birthday last Saturday, which was also a class reunion. She is also going to a Dodger/Giants game. The amount of her brag speaks for itself.

Jason Stillwell: bragged $35 in memory of his father who recently passed away. He was 79 years old.

Rich Watson: bragged $50 on family brags. Lily turned 12, and his son is on his way to Europe, where he will be until the middle of November.

Martin Testa: bragged $42 on celebrating his 42nd wedding anniversary with his wife Debbie.

Pat McDermott: Bragged $36 on reaching 36 years of marriage, and proclaimed that he would be nothing without his wife Cyndy. He said that she has made him a better man. He was also anxious to see that these sentiments made it into this publication.

Kristine Mollenkauf: Bragged $25 on the Ortiz's for hosting a taco dinner.

Carol Bardfield: Bragged, oh wait, was fined $30 or......, at any rate, whatever you call it she climbed to the top of Half Dome, and we are both proud and jealous of her.

FINES

Laurie Tamura, was fined $30 for confusing Atlantic City with Atlanta, Georgia.

Jame Thomas, was fined $30 for not introducing himself.

Teresa Reyburn had to pay a $30 fine to get her cup back that she left after the last meeting.

Finally, a group of Rotarians were each fined $30 for signing up to help at the Family Day in the Park, and not showing up.

There were many excuses, and some were able to talk there way out of a fine, but the following either agreed to or were assessed the fine anyway:

PROGRAM

This week's program was provided by our very own Andy Caldwell. He shared information about the Ground Water Management Act which was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown. The Act provides oversight over state water management, both adjudicated basins and ground water storage. The goal is to determine who gets what water. It establishes three interests; urbanites , farmers/ranchers, and the environment.

The challenge in California is that we either have tons of rain or a drought, which makes calculating average rainfall for the purpose of allotting water very difficult. Pat Brown, built the state's water infrastructure that we enjoy today. At the time that this was built it had a capacity to serve 80 million people, but this was before some of the environmental issues that exist today.
