Concerts in the Park
The band, Unfinished Business, finished up their Concerts in the Park performance on July 22^nd, and on August 5^th   from 1:00 pm  to 3:00 pm, the Concerts in the Park  series continues, with a performance by, The Band.

Steve Lavagnino was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow for all the support he provides our club.  In particular we appreciate his  help with last spring's Barn Party.  

Michele Jensen also presented her father and business partner, Bob Cutler, a Paul Harris Fellow for his support of her in their business.

Rotarian of the Month: Laurie Tamura

Laurie bragged on Dan Blough, our club photographer.  She also bragged on going to a concert at the park and where as part of an auction item Mike Cardona and Jimmie Ventriglia served the meal.

Randy Wise explained that three years ago he had his first grandchild and bragged $100, two weeks ago he had his 2nd grandchild and again bragged $100, on the 13th of July he had his 3rd grandchild so will brag $100 again.   Now he’s done with brags for the year!

Shannon Seifert bragged on her new puppy, Auggie the doggie.  They have not had a puppy in 35 years - $75

Jim Bray bragged on his son Tyler who got his 1st teaching job as a Jr. High teacher in Torrance.  He can walk to the Jr. High from his apartment - $30

Peter Sterling bragged on his son Michael and thanked Allan Hancock College.  He was on the Dean’s List for science at Cal State Bakersfield and will be pursuing a career in chiropractic - $50

Kate Ferguson bragged on her grandson swimming in Jr. Olympics.  Although her  granddaughter did not make it to the Olympics, she cut time off her swimming - $20

This week's program was provided by 5th District Supervisor, Steve Lavagnino. He has served as Santa Barbara County’s 5th District Supervisor since 2011. During this time, Steve has helped reduce budget shortfalls, and established a strategic reserve.  He is the driving force in the Veterans Stand Down event and enjoys doing BBQs with friends and family.

During his presentation Steve provided, as he put it, “a collection of random thoughts, statistics and charts.”

• There are 58 counties in California, each county has 5 supervisors, Los Angeles is the largest county, and Alpine is the smallest.  Santa Barbara is 19th largest county in the state by population.  

• The operating revenue for the county is $41.1 Billion.  The Board of Supervisors has discretion over about $250 Million of the budget.  The biggest portion of the budget goes to Social Services.  $400 million a year is spent on health and human services.

• 62% of kids in Start Barbara County receive social services. There are 1,500 homeless in Santa Maria which is up 39 percent since 2011.

• Santa Barbara has a higher number of Cannabis Cultivation Permit requests than other counties.  As a county, we have a lot of  interest in cultivation, but as far as business, we are about average.
