Little known facts of the Emancipation Proclamation
On this date, the date of our SMBR meeting, Abraham Lincoln issued a "preliminary" Emancipation Proclamation (proclamation #95) on September 22, 1862. It stipulated that if the Southern states did not cease their rebellion by January 1, 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation would go into effect. The Confederacy did not take kindly to this ultimatum and steadfastly failed to yield. Lincoln subsequently issued the second and final proclamation on January 1, 1863. It was this document that is commonly referred to today and the one that changed the focus of the Civil War from ‘Save the Union’ to ‘Free the Slaves’.

About Fighting Back Santa Maria Valley
It’s our mission to partner with all members of the community to achieve resilience against substance use, reductions in violence and promote a healthy and safe environment for our youth and families.
Fighting Back Santa Maria Valley was founded in 2003 by a coalition of concerned organizations and community members. The Coalition was alarmed by the negative impact of Drugs and Alcohol on the youth and families of the Santa Maria Valley. Over the years the focus of the 501(c) 3, non-profit has expanded to include reducing violence and promoting a healthy and safe environment. Currently, FBSMV has 40 full-time and 10 part-time staff members.
Santa Maria Valley includes: Santa Maria, Orcutt, Guadalupe, Los Alamos, Sisquoc, and Casmalia. There are five school districts in the community with close to 30,000 enrolled students. Fighting Back’s strategy is to continue to partner with others in the community by leading our Coalition to build a Drug-Free Community. Fighting Back also provides direct services with our focus on developing resiliency through a child’s relationship with a caring adult. This purpose allows Fighting Back to fight against drugs, alcohol, gangs, and all other negative influences, one kid at a time.
