Trivia is snippets of details, forgotten or lostpieces of information, or things of
“seemingly” minimal importance or value, but having general interest.
The Tootsie Roll has been a favorite since 1907. It was invented by, Leo Hirschfield, the son of an Austrian candy maker, that immigrated to the US at the end of the 19th century. Leo’s masterpiece is said to have been developed in his Brooklyn candy shop and named after his daughter Clara, who was nicknamed “Tootsie."
The first Tootsie Rolls were marketed in 1908 and found their way into the meal rations for soldiers during WWI. WWII saw a different candy, M&Ms, stuffed into the K-rations instead because the Tootsie Roll compound was also found to effectively fix cracked fuel lines. Soldiers would soften the candies in their mouth and use the putty-like material to apply to the crack. The freezing cold air that caused the lines to crack would freeze the candy and then seal the leak, allowing the convoy to continue on its mission. Recent production numbers show over 64 million are made each day. Pretty sweet, huh!

CASA MISSION STATEMENT
California Court Appointed Special Advocate Association ensures that children & youth in the foster care system have a voice and the services their needs for a stable future.
“Children are one-third of our population and 100% of our future.”
The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Breakfast has had a 19-year relationship with CASA and is largely responsible for its relocation to N. Santa Barbara County and Santa Maria. CASA has received over $72,000 from our Club's fundraising efforts, assisting children from infancy to 21-years of age to transition from a difficult life to a meaningful life. Over 1,000 adolescents have received services from CASA in the past two-years. However, nearly 160 children are on the waiting list for assistance in making such a transition. Volunteers are badly needed to eliminate this backlog and reunite a child and their family. Please contact CASA if you are interested in helping a kid.
