STORIES:
Meeting Makeups
Members are encouraged to visit other Rotary Clubs when out of town or unable to attend one of our meetings.  Make Rotary part of your vacation and get your Club Banner from Secretary Ken Bradley to trade with your destination Rotary Club.

Mark Jackson (Rotarian of the Month):is heading to Aspen, Colorado for some type of cooking competition (I think that's what he said...) and to maximize his freebie brags for the month, Deb is having a birthday in mid October, his b-day is in February and by the way, Happy St. Patricks Day and Easter!!!

Martin Testa: recently celebrated his 44th wedding anniversary married to his lovely bride, Debi. Congratulations to you both..$44

Jim Peterson: is having a birthday on Saturday (9/1)..$10. He also bragged $35 on something else that I didn't quite catch. Sorry Jim, but happy birthday to you!!

Jimmy Ventriglia: went to Mexico for a great vacation. Unfortunately for him, he now has to get back to work. Sorry Jim :(  That was worth $50.

Jack Gresser: traveled to Hawaii and almost came "face to face" with a bonifide hurricane. Fortunately for Jack and Yvonne, that didn't happen. He was very happy to report that all is well. $30

Dale Johnson: was glad to be back from his trip to Tennessee. They enjoyed seeing family and the grandkids, but hopefully he won't see another rental car for a very long time (a very expensive story). $20

Chris Hastert: either Chris speaks very fast or I listen extremely slow. Needless to say, all I know is that it involved Jim Small and Glen Morris and he seemed to be very happy about it??? $40

Pat McDermott: celebrated a birthday on the 29th and ate at the "Happiest place on Earth", The Hitching Post in Casmalia. He also was very proud of his daughter Melissa who was named on the "Top 40 under 40" list in the Central Coast Business Times. That all was worth a whopping $100

Mike Buhring: made mention of the Hitching Post having a sponsor sign on the Babe Ruth field. Very cool to support a great community organization.

Where's the flag? President Mike showed a picture of an American flag at the beginning of the meeting and no one could tell him the correct location. As a result, the following members were fined $30 apiece.

Betty Miller
Kevin Walthers
Jim Small

Jim Gregory (Part 2)
Central Coast Aviation

This morning our Rotary Club welcomed back speaker Mr. Jim Gregory. This time Mr. Gregory spoke about the rich history of Central Coast aviation. An entertaining power point presentation accompanied his lecture. Some interesting facts of note were that Hancock Field was used as a training ground for war time aviators. Santa Maria Airport also played an important role for pilot education as well as serving as a P-38 base. Other highlights included, the first flyover in SLO occurred on July 4, 1910. Amelia Earhart visited Cal Poly in 1936 and Harriet Quimby (Central Coast resident) was the 2nd woman ever to obtain a pilots license. Mr. Gregory is a very entertaining speaker and provides a wealth of knowledge on whatever subject matter he speaks about. He is the author of multiple books that support his lectures. Please contact Lee Carroll if you are interested in purchasing one.
